Iron King: Iron Fey Book 1 by Julie Kagawa

Overview:

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny - one she could never have imagined...

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school...or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth-that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face...and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

Review:

This book brings in a whole new side to the world of the Fey. With the grand ideas that Kagawa enlists in her writing, it is a surefire win for all. My recommendation is for readers who are a bit older and able to sit down through a lengthy story plot, typically those in age from 7+ should be able to follow the twists that go on in this book. There are some slightly gruesome scenes that I would suggest a higher age range of at least 9+ to be the target-able age for this book. As always, this is at the discretion of the parent and their knowledge of their own children.

This story takes flight quickly with the usual normal girl is quickly thrust into a seemingly impossible world, and we as readers learn along with her as she makes mistakes, gets thrown around, and all around follows the rabbit hole to where it leads. At first, I was honestly quite worried that this would bore me easily, since it follows the average step by step of the more recent fantasy writings. I didn't expect this.

What a wonderful surprise that someone has decided to create! Everyone who has read a book involving fairies as a main race in their book knows that the fey folk of legend are deathly allergic to all things iron. This is where Kagawa blows us out of the water, what if, like everything in the world of make-believe, the things of our imagination has changed enough to create a new race of fey? What if our new found worship of technology created a generation of fey who are not allergic to iron, but rather are born from it? Magic. This is what happens when you decide to think out of the box! Welcome to my newest favorite series! The Iron Fey!
